A new study in the U.S this week revealed a shocking revelation about the sale and consumption of ground beef - alarming levels of fecal contamination have been found in the product, leading a nation-wide fear about how this might have been affecting the population up until this point, and does this point us in the direction of finding out that ground beef might not be the only meat based product which can lead to ill health?
Almost all the ground-beef which is sold across the U.S has been showed to contain bacteria at a high enough level to cause food poisoning. Consumer reports have tested over 300 packages of ground beef from 103 stores in 26 cities across the nation to test the prevalence of this dangerous bacteria found in the meat.
The bacteria may be less likely to cause illness if the meat is cooked properly, however it is quite commonly known that the 'medium rare' steak is preferred amongst a high percentage of the population, therefore raising the possibility of the bacteria spreading across the ground beef.
Urvashi Rangan, Consumer Reports ' executive director for food safety and sustainability, said ' There's no way to tell by looking at a package of meat or smelling it whether it has harmful bacteria or not. You have to be on guard every time' is this something which the ground beef industry can recover from? As much as people consume meat on a daily basis, if the products they usually purchase aren't suitable for consumption then this could cause a huge decline in the gross revenue which finds it's way into the pockets of the meat industry on a daily basis
From the fast food industry to high street gourmet restaurants, ground beef can be found everywhere and is a very popular purchase amongst many food shoppers, so this latest development is guaranteed to put more people on guard about where they purchase their meat from - or if they decide to purchase meat at all.
